In a cracking match at Ken Maunder, Suburbs New Lynn pulled off a tricky run chase by gunning down 186 off just 24 overs. This came after conceding a first innings deficit to Auckland University, who piled up 363 runs in their first innings then reinforced their lead with an aggressive 59/1 declared off just 3.2 overs. Their run chase was a team effort led by opener Tejas Patel’s 51 off 48 balls but with numerous quick contributions down the order to keep the target in their sights. Despite the loss, Uni still remain in the hunt for the Hedley Howarth title as they currently sit at 2nd place, just behind East Coast Bays.

In a different kind of match at Devonport Domain, North Shore and Eden Roskill played out a high scoring draw with just two innings played across the two days. In the end, Shore came out with first innings points with their 360 surpassing Eden Roskill’s 343/9. Pick of the batting performances were Neil Patel’s 100 for Eden Roskill and 95 for North Shore’s Riley Mudford. Amit Dhadwal and Simon Keene also contributed with a pair of 80s. Best of the bowlers were Eden Roskill's Dev Ratra with 6/80.

At Cornwall Park, the home team dominated enough of their two-day match against Takapuna to secure first innings points. Batting first last week, Takapuna managed 178 mainly thanks to 82 by number 8 batter Edward Middleton, who rescued them from 62/6. Lucas Dacent (5/53) and Sid Dixit (4/48) were the chief destroyers for Cornwall, who then reinforced their strong position by piling up 283. Maara Ave’s 81 was the leading light with good contributions from the rest of the order. For Taka, Matt Jones dominated the bowling charts with 7/127 off an epic 36 overs! Batting again, Taka reached 163/4 before stumps on day two, Quinn Sunde’s 70* being the highlight.

Two excellent teams went toe to toe at Shore Road on Saturday. In the end, East Coast Bays showed why they’re at the top of the table with a first innings win over Parnell. Batting first last week, Bays’ typically aggressive approach yielded them 304 runs from just 64 overs. Isaac Bird’s 112 off 65 balls was a clear standout with further good performances from the top order firming up their innings. Parnell’s Ruben Clinton (4/27) stood out for the home side. In reply Parnell fell short with a 238 that featured many starts but only opener James Nelson (53) getting past 50. Brodie Harrison was chief destroyer for Bays with 5/57. Batting again, Bays reached 38/1 off 6.2 overs before stumps were called.

Oh how an extra day could have helped! Up at Victor Eaves Park in beautiful Orewa, an intriguing match ended in a draw after two extremely close first innings set up a potentially exciting finish. Electing to bowl first last week, Kumeu found immediate reward over the hosts by bowling them for 156. Jithin Ramachandran’s 74 stood tall with no other batter making it over 21. In response, Kumeu fell three runs short with 153, no batter making it over 34. Hibiscus found life easier in their second dig, reaching 241/6 before declaring, helped by 82 to opener David Miller and an unbeaten 50 to start batter Ramesh Lakmal. Kiran Ahir was the standout for the visitors with 5/61.

At their home ground, Howick Pakuranga further entrenched themselves in second place on Tom Hellaby table with another outright win, this time over Ellerslie. Batting first last week, the visitors fell to 172 all out with plenty of starts but no players making it over 31. Lachie Stackpole’s 5/54 was the highlight for the home team. In reply, Howick Pak also found life tough at times but managed to secure a lead thanks to a brilliant 96 from David Winn and 56 from Josh McGregor. Alex Cormack was their chief tormentor with 5/38. Batting again, Ellerslie succumbed to 108 thanks once again to Lachie Stackpole (3/28) and some crippling run outs. Howick Pakuranga then gunned down the petite target, only losing one wicket in the process.

In one of the more topsy-turvy matches of the round, an absolute nailbiter played out at Te Atatu Park between Waitakere and Papatoetoe with the visitors coming away with first innings points despite almost winning and almost losing outright. After four innings of to and fro, Papatoetoe needed just a handful of runs in the dying light on Saturday but only had one wicket in hand by the time stumps were called. Bating first, the home side were rolled for 100 with wickets shared amongst the Papatoetoe bowlers. In reply the visitors lifted themselves to 198/5 before declaring with Harrish Kannan’s 83 and Prabjyot Rehal’s 67 the two leading contributors. Facing a large deficit the Waitakere batters fought their way to 259 in their second dig with Aman Kaundal’s typically aggressive 71 off 45 balls the standout. Needing 161 to win, Papatoetoe started well but regular wickets held them back. Even then, the target was firmly in their sites as their lower order crumbled. They ended just three runs short but with only one wicket in hand. A ripsnorting match!

Like Howick Pakuranga, Grafton likewise completed an outright win on the weekend, against Birkenhead. Grafton’s first innings of 253 was dominated by Dylan Taylor’s domineering 126 from 112 balls. Birkenhead managed 214 in reply, helped veteran Brian Barnard’s 83. Grafton’s Fraser Campbell (4/33) was the pick of the bowlers. Despite having a handy lead to build on, Grafton lost regular wickets in their second dig, Dylan Taylor (44 off 40) once again standing out as they declared on 131/7. Chasing 161 for the win, Birkenhead were shot out for 138, with Taine Bayly (5/38) the chief destroyer. Grafton now sit at 101 points on the table, comfortably in first place.

In one of the upsets of the weekend, newcomers Suburbs New Lynn continued their excellent season with a win over the more fancied Howick Pakuranga team. Batting first, Suburbs only managed 80 thanks to Skye Bowden’s 4/11. Anika Tauwhare played the anchor role, selling her wicket dearly for 32 unbeaten runs of 111 balls. Extras were the next highest scorer as Howick Pakuranga rolled the visitors for 80. Needing some cheap wickets in reply, ‘burbs found them with Divyanchi Chauhan (3/22) making early breakthroughs to peg Howick Pak back. Despite Bowden again providing a threat, the visitors did enough to eventually bowl out Howick Pakuranga for 72 and secure an 8-run win. Anika Tauwhare ended with 3/12 to cap off a great all-round performance.

At the home of women’s cricket, Cornwall flexed their muscles with a good batting display against Kumeu/North Shore. Put into bat, Cornwall managed a mammoth 277/2 thanks to Anika Todd, who hit her first ever century with 117* off 114 balls, and Bella Armstrong, who smashed an unbeaten 66 off 54 balls. In reply Kumeu/North Shore rode on an anchoring performance from new recruit Rishika Jaswal, who hit 39 from 64 balls, but the Cornwall bowlers proved too much for their batters and they fell well short in the end. In a confidence-boosting milestone, they managed a score of over 100 for the first time this season as they ended their innings on 108 after 28 overs.

In the second of three one-sided matches of the weekend, Auckland University consolidated their top position on the Prichard Cup table with a huge win over third-placed Takapuna. Batting first after losing the toss, Uni smashed their way to 246/6 thanks to opener Caitlyn Gurrey’s 92 off 76 balls. A pair of 45s from Naomi Matthews and Jesse Prasad lifted Uni further. In the end their total
proved far too big for the young Takapuna side, who fell to 100 all out in the 28th over. Zamera Ikiua’s 4/36 was the highlight of the bowling stats for Auckland Uni.

Parnell showed why they’re one of the teams to beat this season with a 183-run win over Papatoetoe/Parnell. Batting first after winning the toss at Papatoetoe Rec Ground, Parnell managed 264/4 thanks to an aggressive ton from Yasmeen Kareem (105* from 108) and 51 off 54 from Cate Pedersen. This proved a wee bit too much for the home side, who managed 71/9 in response with Carol Agifili’s 22* off 16 ending up as their highlight.
