Auckland Cricket's move to Colin Maiden Park has reached another significant milestone, with construction now underway on the venue that will become the organisation's new home from 2027.
Following a pre-start blessing led by Ngāti Pāoa in late May, attended by representatives from the Ōrākei Local Board along with Auckland Cricket Board members and staff, work has commenced on the first stage of the transformation project.
Groundworks are now underway, including the realignment and expansion of the pitch block, upgrades to the playing oval and the construction of new spectator embankments. These works represent the first visible stage of a development that will create a modern, high-performance cricket hub for Auckland and the wider region.
The project follows confirmation earlier this year that Colin Maiden Park will become the future home of Auckland Cricket, with the venue expected to host Auckland ACES and Auckland HEARTS matches from January 2027.
Once complete, the redeveloped ground will feature a re-oriented pitch block, new outfield, spectator-friendly viewing areas, broadcast infrastructure, upgraded player facilities and a refitted pavilion including a long room. Existing buildings on site will be adapted to accommodate Auckland Cricket's administration and high-performance staff, while an all-weather grass training facility, funded by New Zealand Cricket, will further strengthen the venue's high-performance capabilities.
Auckland Cricket Chair Brendon Gibson said it was exciting to see physical work begin on a project that will serve the game for generations to come.
"We are incredibly excited to see work now underway to create a fantastic community asset and home for Auckland Cricket. This project will provide a great facility to play, practice and watch cricket, while supporting the continued growth of the game across Auckland."
The development forms part of the Foundation Agreement signed by Auckland Council, the Crown, Eden Park, Auckland Cricket and Auckland Rugby Union. The agreement includes $10 million of combined Crown and Auckland Council funding for the Colin Maiden Park project and outlines a pathway for Auckland Cricket's transition from Eden Park after more than a century.
Construction will be completed in stages, with the current groundworks to be followed by pavilion renovations and further facility upgrades.
As Auckland Cricket enters this exciting new chapter, the organisation looks forward to sharing the journey with its cricket community every step of the way and welcoming fans to Colin Maiden Park when the first matches are played in 2027.
