Auckland Cricket is proud to congratulate John Sparling on being appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours, for services to cricket.

One of the most respected figures in Auckland cricket history, John’s contribution to the game has spanned more than six decades. A former Auckland and New Zealand representative player, he captained Auckland for nine consecutive seasons and later continued to serve the game as a selector, administrator and advocate.

As a player, Sparling appeared in 73 first class matches between 1956/57 and 1970/71. He was an extraordinarily talented allrounder, picking up 248 wickets at at average of 21 with his spin and hitting 2,977 runs at 28.08 with the bat. He captained the side on 51 occasions.

He also played 11 tests for New Zealand between 1958 and 1964, a majority of which were overseas.

John remains a treasured part of the Auckland Cricket community as Patron of the Auckland Cricket Association, a Life Member and an Honorary Cricket Member. He was the inaugural inductee into Auckland Cricket's Hall of Fame in March 2025.

This honour is fitting recognition of John’s outstanding service, leadership and lifelong commitment to cricket. Auckland Cricket extends its warmest congratulations to John and his family on this well-deserved achievement.
