The Auckland ACES head north to Cobham Oval in Whangārei tomorrow for a pivotal Round 9 Ford Trophy clash against Northern Districts, with first ball at 10:30am on Friday 13 February.

With the regular season nearing its conclusion, the ACES not only need to secure victory in Whangārei, but will also be keeping a close eye on other results, with the Wellington Firebirds’ remaining fixtures set to play a decisive role in the finals picture.

Auckland arrive off the back of consecutive losses, first to Canterbury and then to the Firebirds earlier this week. Despite the results, there were encouraging signs with the bat against Wellington. Dale Phillips, Sean Solia and Bevon Jacobs all made starts and looked composed at the crease, laying foundations that the side will be eager to convert into substantial scores.

There was late momentum too, with Rohit Gulati providing a burst of energy at the death. Gulati struck 17 at a strike rate of 243, a sharp reminder of the impact he can have in the closing overs when acceleration is required.

The bowlers also showed promise on a surface that had been used for several matches. Leg-spinner Adi Ashok was a standout, claiming three wickets and generating control through the middle overs, while the attack as a whole demonstrated the discipline required in List A cricket.

The Auckland ACES take on Northern Districts in Round 9 of the Ford Trophy at Cobham Oval, Whangārei, with first ball at 10:30am on Friday 13 February.
