U17 Regional Development Tournament

The inaugural U17 Regional Development Tournament was held from 8–11 December at Lloyd Elsmore Park, with matches played in a 50-over format across four days. The tournament brought together six teams and 78 of the region’s top U17 players, selected through the Regional Development Programme and open trials.

The standard of cricket across the week was outstanding. U17 Men 1, coached by Adrian Dale, claimed the title after finishing top of the table with three wins from four matches, setting the benchmark for consistency across the tournament. The highlight of this tournament was the integrating of players from different schools/clubs/regions playing as a team and putting together team efforts.

Conditions played a major role in the tournament’s success. The wickets were excellent throughout the week and, combined with hot weather, allowed players to express themselves fully whilst challenging their fitness and focus across multiple days of cricket. Coaches and Talent Identification staff were impressed by the overall skill level, competitiveness, and depth on display within this age group.

Batting performances were a highlight, with six centuries scored across the four days. The standout was Kian Krause (Westlake Boys / East Coast Bays), who produced an exceptional tournament, registering two centuries and consistently impacting games at the top level.

With the ball,  St. Kentigen’s all rounder Hirresh Mauran delivered the most eye-catching performance, claiming a six-wicket haul. John Cope, the off-spinner from Mount Albert Grammar, also impressed with his consistency and control throughout the week finishing as the leading wicket taker.

Overall, the tournament achieved its aim of providing a high-performance environment for emerging U17 talent. The depth of skill, strong individual performances, and competitive nature of the matches highlighted the value of the Regional Development pathway and set a strong foundation for future editions of the tournament.
