Auckland ACES left-arm orthodox spinner Louis Delport has announced his retirement from professional cricket, bringing to a close a career that spanned 10 years and two countries.
Delport, 37, began his career with Western Province in South Africa before moving to New Zealand after the 2014/15 season. He became a regular fixture in the ACES XI after making his debut in April 2018.
Reflecting on his journey, Delport said:
“As I look back on my time with Auckland Cricket, it’s the people along the way that have had the biggest impact on me. The friendships I’ve made are something I will cherish forever.”
Over seven seasons in Auckland, Delport established himself as a consistent and reliable performer across all formats. The wily spinner took 178 wickets for the ACES, including four First-Class five-wicket hauls, and maintained a solid bowling average of 33—no small feat on New Zealand pitches more suited to pace bowling.
Delport was equally effective in the shorter formats, boasting a miserly economy rate of 4.6 in List A cricket. In the Super Smash, he formed a formidable bowling partnership with Danru Ferns and Ben Lister, playing a key role in Auckland’s 2023/24 title run.
“Of course the on-field success was awesome—the trophies we won etc,” Delport continued. “But it’s the people that I shared them with that made those memories so special.”
But Delport’s legacy goes well beyond the numbers. His laid-back approach, sense of humour, and energetic wicket celebrations made him a fan favourite and beloved teammate. His charisma even inspired the formation of a fan club: the Louis Delport Celebration Appreciation Society.
“Auckland will always have a special place in my heart and I’m grateful for the opportunity that they gave me,” said Delport. “To be able to have represented Auckland and wear the baggy blue is a privilege and an honour. Lastly, to those that supported me off the field, THANK YOU.”
Auckland Cricket GM Performance & Talent Evan Jones praised Delport’s impact both on and off the field:
“We thank Louis for the dedication and passion he gave to the ACES over the course of his career. Louis’ pride in the baggy blue showed every time he took the field, and his infectious personality will be missed around the group. We wish Louis well as he embarks on the next chapter of his life.”
Delport’s retirement opens up a spot on the ACES contract list for the 2025/26 season. The first round of contracts will be announced on June 22.
