Robbie O'Donnell Leaves ACES

After representing Auckland for over ten years, Auckland batsman Robbie O’Donnell is set to leave the ACES before the commencement of the 2024/25 season.

O’Donnell, 29, made his debut in a List A match in March 2014 and has captained the Auckland side since 2019/20, compiling an impressive record as both a leader and a middle order batsman.

Representing Auckland has been a family affair for O’Donnell, who has played alongside his younger brother Will for the past five seasons. Their father, Mark, coached the ACES twice, once in the early 2000s and again near the start of his sons’ professional careers.

“Representing Auckland has been a childhood dream come true for me. I have great memories sliding around the Eden Park outfield as a 7-year old with my brother Will while my Dad coached the mighty ACES.

“I have had the pleasure of playing alongside, and winning titles with my brother, which has created many proud moments for our family,” says O’Donnell.

One of the most decorated captains to lead the ACES, O’Donnell achieved a much coveted triple trophy milestone in 2023/24 when he lead his team to glory in the Super Smash, meaning the Auckland side has won the Plunket Shield (2021/22), Ford Trophy (2019/20, 2021/22) and the T20 title under his leadership.

His batting record puts him in the top echelon of Auckland players and he currently sits as the highest run scorer in Auckland history with 8,382 runs across formats, including 12 centuries.

Interim Auckland Cricket CEO Ian Francis says O’Donnell’s contribution to Auckland has extended beyond his on-field performances: “Robbie has been a great cricketer, a great leader, and an overall incredible person for Auckland Cricket and our community.

“He goes with our best wishes for his desire for a fresh start, and we will welcome him back with open arms whenever he wishes to return and continue his amazing career with Auckland Cricket," says Francis.

Newly appointed Auckland ACES coach Rob Nicol says O’Donnell’s experience will be missed, but his absence gives an opportunity for other players: "Rob has been an instrumental leader and an integral part of the Auckland cricket fabric.

“While he will be deeply missed, we respect his decision to prioritize his cricketing goals. His departure presents new opportunities for us, and we are excited to see how our group reacts and responds."
