After being sent in to bat, Eden Roskill made serious hay against Auckland University at Colin Maiden Park. Their top order fired, led by Swayam Desai’s 75 and after a few wobbles in the middle order, their lower order batters rallied impressively, dominated by 68 for number 9 Dev Ratra and 56 to number 10 Daman Bhatti. With just a handful of overs to bat before the stumps, Auckland Uni lost a couple of wickets to end the day 309 runs behind.

It was a similar story at Cornwall Park with the home side in arrears by a significant amount of runs at the end of day one. This time the visitors won the toss and elected to bat, with Ormiston and Miller firing at the top of the innings. Some further decent contributions from the middle order lifted them to 313 before being bowled out. Sid Dixit’s 5/85 and 3/34 to Samrath Singh were the highlights for Cornwall. The home side then survived 10 overs of tough cricket before stumps, ending on 1/17 by stumps, still 296 runs behind.

On a bowlers day at Ken Maunder, the home side reached stumps having just managed to halve their deficit but with only one wicket left in hand. Electing to bat after winning the toss, North Shore made a decent fist of things with their top order stringing together partnerships before a lower order collapse inflicted by Malay Patel, ended their innings at 208. Patel ended with superb figures of 8/63. In reply, Suburbs struggled from the get-go with the Shore bowlers striking at regular intervals. A middle order partnership between Barry and Gattu was the highlight of their batting effort before a lower order collapse left them struggling.

In the only game to feature two completed innings on day one, Kumeu and Grafton went toe-to-toe at Huapai Domain with Grafton coming away with a 23 run lead at stumps. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Grafton had to contend with Soliman Jaan’s 79 off 88 but found inroads into the rest of the order. Only Harmanpreet Singh’s 44 at number 9 offered further resistance. Taine Bayly was the pick of the bowlers with 5/69. In reply, Grafton’s middle order fired with fifties to Sineth Gunawardene and Jack Duffy and 45 to Bayly. Their sporting declaration 35 runs ahead set up a tricky period for Kumeu to negotiate at the end of the day. They went to stumps unscathed on 12/0.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Howick Pakuranga made an early breakthrough but found firm resistance from the rest of the Papatoetoe’s top order. Rehal (43), Money (54) and Singh (36) all fired for their side but the visitors managed to hit back to eventually bowl the hosts out for 231 in the 78th over. Parth Shah (58) and Sachin Variath (35) were the pick of the batters for Waitakere but some penetrative bowling from Parikshith Narsimhan with 4/54 eventually helped Ellerslie to take all 10 wickets. Waitakere’s Mohinder Suri was then incisive in reply, claiming three key Ellerslie top order wickets before stumps.

Takapuna booked a place in the Jeff Crowe Cup finals with a stomping win over Parnell this weekend. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Parnell found life difficult by not being able to put together big partnerships up top despite decent starts. Matt Jones (4/18) and Peter Ruffell (3/36) did a majority of the damage as the home side were eventually bowled out for 160 in the 42nd over. Takapuna smashed the required runs in the 32nd over with Tristan van Ingel-Kal (72*) and Mike Sclanders (42*) the pick of the batters.

Also booking their place in the final were East Coast Bays, who triumphed over Auckland University on a bowlers day at Colin Maiden Park. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Bays made it to 216 thanks for Ryan Harrison with 53* and a typically aggressive 56 from Ryan Schierhout. Wickets were shared amongst the bowlers with Nick Stobart’s 3/48 the pick. The visiting bowlers then ran through the hosts in the reply with only a lower order partnership between Josh Olliver (42) and Stobart (41) offering real resistance. Smith, Mecredy and Delport all picked up three wickets each. East Coast Bays will now meet Takapuna for a North Shore derby final on the 3rd of March at Windsor Park.

In arguably the best match of the weekend, Birkenhead booked their spot in the Richard Jones final with a tight win over Grafton at Victoria Park. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Birkenhead reached 218 thanks mainly to their top order before being bowled out in the last over. Grafton’s top order fired in reply and they were well set on 176/3 before a spectacular collapse triggered by Mayur Masad (that man again!) saw the home team stranded on 213 in the final over, six runs short. Masand was the pick of the bowlers with 5/27.

In another win for teams north of the bridge, Hibiscus Coast triumphed over Eden Roskill on Sunday thanks to some gutsy defensive bowling. Batting first at Keith Hay Park, Hibiscus managed 219/8 off their 50 overs thanks to half centuries for Ramesh Lakmal (this guy!) and Umesh Ranaraja. Despite some decent resistance from Mihir Raniga with 42*, Eden Roskill fell 22 runs short in the 47th over, Raniga eventually running out of partners. All eyes on Victor Eaves Park on the 3rd of March for the final!

In one of the true upsets of the weekend, a nearly full-strength Howick Pakuranga side were beaten by 7th-placed Papatoetoe at their home ground of Lloyd Elsmore Park. Batting first after losing the toss, Howick Pak only managed 84/8 off their 20 overs with just an anchoring 28 from Neena Woollaston keeping them together. Dayle Anderson, Samantha Brake-Howard and Cecelia Beck were effective with the ball with two wickets each. Papatoetoe got home in the 18th over thanks to Makayla Templeton’s 22 and 11* to Dayle Anderson.

The other morning match at Lloyd Elsmore Park was a nail biter with Parnell triumphing by 5 runs in the final over. After being sent in to bat, Parnell managed to bat their 20 overs, losing their final wicket off the last ball but managing 105 runs. Openers Cate Pedersen (25) and Sam Barriball (19) were the standout with Zamera Ikiua (4/13) and Eli McKenna (3/21) doing a great job with the ball for Auckland University. In reply, Uni couldn’t get over the line despite a superb 44 off 40 from opener Nensi Patel. Madison Curran did the bulk of the damage with 4/16 off her 4 overs, restricting Uni to 100/8 off their 20 overs.

Batting first after being sent in, Suburbs made a watchful start with both openers setting a strong platform but it was captain Heather Siegers who pumped the total up to 122/3 with an unbeaten 46 off 32 balls including two mighty sixes. Takapuna never really fired in reply with only captain Kaitlyn Halliday able to offer consistent resistance with 40 off 29 as they fell 18 runs short. Kyla Murdoch, Anika Tauwhare, Zarah Samadi and Poppy Whitfield were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets each.

Despite a decent start, Parnell were hampered by regular wickets and no batter making it out of the teens. Lambat (3/11) and Josie Penfold (3/7) proved difficult to handle as the visitors fell 39 runs short.

Batting first after winning the toss, Uni lifted themselves to 121/8 off their 20 overs thanks to decent starts from their middle order. Cecelia Beck was particularly effective for Papatoetoe with 3/12 off her four overs. Papatoetoe never got going in reply thanks to another great bowling display from Nensi Patel, who picked up the first four wickets, all bowled, to leave Papatoetoe reeling at 8/4. They eventually fell to 30 all out with no batters able to make it to double figures, giving Uni a 91 run win.

Grabbing another win to cap off a great day, Suburbs New Lynn were able to defeat the home team at Cornwall Park thanks to some more excellent bowling. Batting first after winning the toss, Suburbs kept wickets in hand against some tight bowling from Cornwall. Anika Tauwhare (42) and Shahana Samadi (26*) were the standout batters as their side reached 94/4 off 20 overs. Despite a small-ish target, the hosts were never able to get going in reply against another inspired all-round performance from Anika Tauwhare (2/15) and a bunch of wickets to Kyla Murdoch (4/16) and Poppy Whitfield (3/4), falling 31 runs short in the end.

Bouncing back from their earlier defeat, Takapuna were able to gun down their target in just the 11th over against Kumeu/North Shore at Melville Park. Electing to bowl after winning the toss, Taka restricted their opponents to 73/6 off their 20 overs thanks to some tight bowling. Several Kumeu/North Shore players were able to make starts but they weren’t able to push the run rate up to set up a challenging total. Takapuna chased down the runs in the 11th over thanks to some aggression from Tayla Hurley (29 off 20). For their part, the Kumeu/North Shore bowlers found regular breakthroughs with some good wickets to Jess Smith (2/9), picking up 6 Taka batters.
