CITYGUARD Security Hedley Howarth Men’s Two-Day Competition | Round 2, Day 1
Auckland University 188/3 (Barrington Rowland 102*) trail North Shore 213 (Adi Dhadwal 75) by 25 runs
DEVONPORT DOMAIN | In their first home game of the season at the beautiful Devonport Domain, defending champions North Shore continued their tough start to the season as visitors Auckland University dominated proceedings on day one. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Uni cleaned up Sam Hinds early before top order partnerships anchoring around Adi Dhadwal’s 75 lifted Shore to 177/2. From there they collapsed in a heap as Uni’s bowlers reaped rewards. The home side lost their last 8 wickets for just 36 runs as wickets were shared amongst the Uni bowlers.
In response Uni lost two early wickets of their own before the experience of Barrington Rowland combined with the dashing strokeplay of Riley McCullum for a 116-run partnership for the third wickets. Barrington then continued on with Jonathan Low to lead AUCC to 188/3 at stumps, bringing up another century in the process. They’ll continue next week 25 runs behind Shore with 7 wickets still in hand.

Parnell 386 (Daniel Presland 111, Nikith Perera 71, Aniket Parikh 53) lead Takapuna by 386 runs
SHORE ROAD RESERVE | In a heavyweight clash at Shore Road Reserve, Parnell dominated proceedings over Takapuna with an aggressive display with the bat. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Takapuna made early inroads after a fast start by Ruben Clinton, reducing Parnell to 66/3 as Ross ter Braak continued his good form from last week with two wickets up top.
Parnell then recovered with a series of excellent middle order partnerships and a combination of watchful and hyper aggressive cricket. Young Daniel Presland bashed his way to 111 with seven sixes, receiving good support from Aniket Parikh’s 53. After a pair of wickets left Parnell precariously placed at 259/6, it was Nikith Perera’s turn to bring the fireworks with 71 off 58, including 7 fours and 5 sixes. Taka struck back with some wickets to end Parnell’s innings at 386 and stumps were called after 95.2 overs of cricket.

Suburbs New Lynn 171/9 (Tejas Patel 50, Jamie Hayes 4/38) lead Cornwall by 171 runs
KEN MAUNDER PARK | A theme of this weekend of Premier Club Cricket was teams waiting for fields to dry after some fairly heavy downpours on Friday. One such match took place at Ken Maunder Park on Saturday as Suburbs grafted their way to 171/9 after being sent in to bat by Cornwall. A top order 50 from Tejas Patel led Suburbs’ effort up front before regular strikes from Jamie Hayes dented their progress. The home side made it through to stumps without being bowled out thanks to some attritional batting from Sean Payle (36 off 126) and Sam Cook (35 off 126). Some good old fashioned grind in damp conditions but let’s hope things dry up over the week and we can get an exciting day two this weekend!
SCORECARD
East Coast Bays 115/6 (Luke Watson 6/22) lead Eden Roskill 83 by 32 runs
KEITH HAY PARK | Ball dominated bat down in Mt. Roskill with ERDCC somehow producing a turning wicket despite all the rain around during the week! Winning the toss and electing to bat, Eden Roskill started watchfully as East Coast Bays chose to open the bowling with young offspinner Luke Watson. They battled to 44/1 before Watson and Louis Delport tore through their middle order, Watson ending with figures of 6/22 as the home side were skittled for 83.
Also finding life tough, Bays had to shelve their infamous attacking instincts and play within themselves to get a lead over Roskill. Captain Ryan Schierhout led the way with 43 off 90 as Eden Roskill picked up the prized scalps of Ryan Harrison, Cole Briggs and Isaac Bird relatively cheaply. They fought their way into the lead and ended the day on 115/6, 32 runs ahead.

Waitakere 229/8 (Aman Kaundal 79*) lead Kumeu by 229 runs
HUAPAI DOMAIN | Also starting late were Waitakere and Kumeu out at Huapai Domain, though one player in particular found conditions very much to his liking. Bucking the weekend trend by winning the toss and electing to bat, Waitakere found themselves in a spot of bother at 43/2 after a watchful start. Brad Nash (32), Prashantkumar Patel (29) and Parth Shah (42) stabilized the innings but it was Aman Kaundal’s onslaught that really got the Waitak innings going. Fresh from a double of a half century and five-wicket bag in round one, Kaundal bashed 79 unbeaten runs off just 49 balls with 8 mighty sixes and is fast becoming the MVP for Tom Hellaby this season. WCC finished a shortened day on 229/8 with Akash Christian the pick of the Kumeu bowlers with 3/62.

Grafton 117/6 trail Ellerslie 184 (Harsh Patel 56) by 67 runs
VICTORIA PARK | In a battle between the yellow and black clubs at Victoria Park, little was separating Grafton and Ellerslie at the end of the first day’s play. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Grafton’s pace bowlers steamed through the ECC top and middle order, with only Abrar Alam’s 33 and Adi Ogra’s 20 offering meaningful resistance. But in another theme of the weekend, a lower order player counter-attacked with some mighty hitting to see his team through to a respectable total. For Ellerslie, this player was Harsh Patel, who boshed 56 off 53 balls with 4 sixes. Ellerslie ended on 184, which looked all the more respectable when GUCC’s batters found going tough. Dylan Taylor fought with 30 but regular strikes pegged the home team back. A fighting unbeaten partnership of 36 between Ben Brady and Jack Duffy saw Grafton through to stumps at 117/6, still 67 runs in arrears. The home side will be hoping for more runs from these two next week.

Howick Pakuranga 137/5 lead Birkenhead by 137 runs
BIRKENHEAD WAR MEMORIAL PARK | In one of the more attritional matches on the weekend, Howick Pakuranga battled accurate bowling, a damp deck and a lush outfield to get through to stumps on 137/5 after 68 overs of play. With little to do in tough conditions except protect their own wickets, only Lachlan Stackpole with 32 off 28 and Azharudin Lambat with 41 off 95 were able to score freely. Andrew Morrison fought hard for his unbeaten 28 off 135 and may look to reap the rewards of a dry week of weather when he pads up again next week in probably less challenging conditions.

Prichard Cup Women’s One-Day Competition | Round 3
Auckland University 74/4 (11.4) beat Papatoetoe 73/5 (17) by 6 wickets
COLIN MAIDEN PARK | In a match reduced to 17 overs per side after a late start at Colin Maiden Park, Auckland University eased past Papatoetoe to go top of the table in the Prichard Cup. Rapidly looking like the form side of the competition, Uni bowled miserly to restrict the visitors to 73/5 after the won the toss and elected to bowl. Meddy Hyde was the pick of the bowlers with 2/17 off 4 overs. In response, the outcome never looked in doubt with Prue Catton at the crease. She calmly guided her side to the win with 25 not out off 23 balls as they wrapped up proceedings after 11.4 overs.

Suburbs New Lynn 149/9 off 40 overs (Jasmine Perry 4/26) beat Kumeu/North Shore 104 (Jess Smith 36, Kyla Murdoch 4/8, Anika Tauwhare 4/21) by 45 runs
MELVILLE PARK | In the only Prichard Cup match to go the distance on the weekend, newcomers Suburbs New Lynn and Kumeu/North Shore fought it out at Melville Park. After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Suburbs made a watchful start before their middle order pair of Anika Tauwhare and Laila Jeeru lifted them to a respectable total of 149/9 off their 40 overs. Jasmine Perry was the pick of the KCC/NSCC bowlers with 4/26 off 8 overs.
Chasing 150 for the win, Kumeu/North Shore were well played on 4/78 but regular strikes for Kyla Murdoch (4/8) and Tauwhare (4/21) pegged them back and they were dismissed for 104 after 30 overs, star player Jess Smith top scoring with 36 off 30. It was an improved showing from KCC/NSCC though, and despite the result they’ll take some confidence from this match going forward.

LEGENDS CUP | Round Two
Team Perkins 194 (Saachi Shahri 71, Izzy Gaze 33, Breearne Illing 3/17, Anika Tauwhare 3/45) beat Team Huddleston 156 (Josie Penfold 3/32) by 38 runs
MELVILLE PARK | Our top female talent assembled again at Melville Park on Sunday for the second round of the Legends Cup. The two equally matched teams produced another great match, once again justifying the creation of this competition as a bridging of the gap between club and domestic cricket. Winning the toss and batting first, Team Perkins’ innings was anchored by a brilliant 71 off 89 balls from HEARTS opener Saachi Shahri. She received able support from Izzy Gaze with 33 off 49 and the rest of the middle order though Team Huddleston broke through regularly to peg Perkins back. Bree Illing was the pick of the bowlers with 3/17 off 8 overs.
Chasing 195 for the win, Huddleston started watchfully but the batters never really got going with no one able to pass 30. Some poor running didn’t help with three of the ten wickets being run outs. Wickets were shared with Josie Penfold’s 3/32 as the pick of the bunch. The Legends Cup will now take a break for a few weeks before returning on the 3rd of December, again at Melville Park.
