Suburbs New Lynn 87/3 trail Eden Roskill 156 (Swayam Desai 51, Adithya Ashok 4/23) by 69 runs

At their home ground of Ken Maunder, Suburbs elect to bowl first upon winning the toss. Eden Roskill start this round hoping to push themselves up to 2nd on the ladder. After good start with the bat from Swayam Desai (51), Roskill struggled to build partnerships, mainly due to regular strikes from star ACES bowlers Adithya Ashok (4/23) and Ben Lister (1/28), marking his first match back from injury. Suburbs eventually dismissed Eden Roskill for 156. In reply, Harjot Johal’s (2/8) opening spell caused some worries for Suburbs. Suburbs were put on the back foot until Michael Barry (48*) counterattacked to lift the home team to 87/3 at stumps, trailing by 69 runs.

Cornwall 52 (Matt Jones 6/22) & 13/2 trail Takapuna 236/8 dec. (Quinn Sunde 55, Guy Harley 51) by 171 runs

In a last ditch bid to avoid relegation, Takapuna threw the kitchen sink at their match on Saturday against Cornwall. Batting first on the well-drained volcanic soil of Cornwall Park, Takapuna quickly lost two wickets, including ACES opener Will O’Donnell, but bounced back with 50s to both Guy Harley and young Quinn Sunde. Further strikes for Siddhesh Dixit (4/42) and Michael van den Berg (2/50) pegged Taka back before a 38-run 9th wicket partnership lifted them to 236/8, where they shrewdly declared. The visiting team’s power-packed bowling attack then blew Cornwall off the park, rolling them for 52. This must have come as a shock to the home team, sitting as they are at second on the table behind North Shore, perhaps not in contention for promotion but certainly likely to boost ahead of third placed Eden Roskill with a win this round. Matt Jones (6/22) did most of the damage with good input from Ter Braak (2/12) and O’Donnell (also 2/12). Needing only 26/2 overs to deal to Cornwall, Takapuna wisely opted to enforce the follow on and had them 13/2 at stumps. Next week will be an intriguing one with Takapuna likely missing their ACES players and Cornwall fighting tooth and nail to avoid an innings defeat.

Hibiscus Coast 216/8 (Tyler Mcgladdery 83, Umesh Ranaraja 60) vs. Birkenhead

At Birkenhead War Memorial Park, Hibiscus Coast won the toss and elected to bat. The Birkenhead bowlers found some immediate reward with Mayur Masand (2/45) and Anuradha Jayampathi (2/49) breaking through the top order to leave Hibiscus in trouble at 26/4. Tyler Mcgladdery (83) and Umesh Ranaraja (60) rescued the innings somewhat with a solid 6th wicket stand before a clump of wickets fell towards the end of the day as Hibiscus finished with a solid 216/8 after 74 overs.

Grafton 62/4 trail Howick Pakuranga 166 (Bill Walsh 68) by 104 runs

Grafton, currently sitting at first on the table but only a smidgen of a point in front of East Coast Bays, will want to win big this round to solidify their position. They started perfectly against Howick Pakuranga on Saturday, running through their batters for 166. Only Bill Walsh was able to offer decent resistance with 68 as the wickets were shared around the Grafton bowlers. In reply Grafton find themselves in trouble at 62/4, hoping to at least get first innings points but ideally pushing for an outright result this Saturday. They’ll be up against a Howick side eager to see them fall, with Connah Thompson already bagging 3/18 in this innings. Expect to see a mighty duel this Saturday.

Waitakere 116/7 trail East Coast Bays 363/7 (Ryan Harrison 75, Luke Watson 72, Issac Bird 54) by 247 runs

Fighting for the winning spot at the top of the table, East Coast Bays came out guns blazing against Waitakere at Te Atatu Park on Saturday. After being sent in by the home team, Bays blasted 363/7 off just 56 overs. Each batter contributed but the standouts were Ryan Harrison with 75, Luke Watson with a comparatively patient 72 and Isaac Bird with 54 off just 29. That’s not to mention the other contributions all the way down the order, including Louis Delport with an unbeaten 42 off 18 balls. Their version of Bazball, some are calling it “Whiteyball” after their coach Nick White, is paying dividends for them this season and an outright win here (if Grafton fail to get over the line against Howick Pakuranga) will see them at the top of the Tom Hellaby table and promoted to the Hedley Howarth trophy competition next season. By stumps they had Waitakere at 116/7, Delport and Christopher Groenink amongst the wickets with two each. Unless Waitakere stage a Blackcaps level comeback, expect a big result this weekend.

SCORECARD

Kumeu 255/5 (Akash Christian 134*) vs. Ellerslie

Out in beautiful Huapai, the home side made a good fist of their first innings after winning the toss and electing to bat. Reaching 255/5 at stumps, Kumeu’s innings was dominated by star player Akash Christian, who compiled an unbeaten 134. Receiving good support from Ryan Jenner’s 46, as well as some start from the rest of the order, Christian was particularly savage on Ellerslie opening bowler Joseph Wilkinton, who was carted for 108 runs off 16 0vers. Kumeu will resume next week either looking to extend their first innings or will declare, putting the ball in Ellerslie’s court. Neither side is primed to win the competition but will hope to end the season on a high.

Parnell 176/7 (Rishika Jaswal 47, Ayaan Lambat 5/34) beat Howick Pakuranga 175 (Radhika Patel 55, Skye Bowden 40, Cecilia Beck 3/17, Jaswal 3/34) by 3 wickets

Howick Pakuranga, riding high off their success in the Pearl Dawson trophy, weren’t able to translate their success into the 50 over format on Saturday, crashing to 3 wicket loss to the far less fancied Parnell. Being sent in by Parnell, Howpak were cruising at 2/123 at one point with 55 to opener Radhika Patel and an aggressive 40 to HEARTS allrounder Skye Bowden. But young gun Rashika Jaswal and Cecilia Beck spun the middle order in a web, triggering a collapse that saw them crash to 175. Jaswal then opened up the chase with a patient 47 as wickets fell around her. Fellow youngster Ayaan Lambat did her level best to run through the rest of the Parnell batters with a five wicket bag (5/34) but a superb unbeaten 59 run 8th wicket partnership between Izzy Fox (27*) and Olivia Anderson (21*) saw Parnell through to an unlikely victory.

SCORECARD

Takapuna 170/6 (Brooke James 73*, Kate Irwin 40) beat Papatoetoe 166 (Makayla Templeton 45, Roz McNeill 3/26) by four wickets

Out at Papatoetoe, Takapuna booked themselves a place in the final with a solid win over the home side. Bowling first, Taka had Papatoetoe under pressure with the Watton sisters striking early. HEARTS spinner Makayla Templeton and Megan Pearson staged a rebuild before a burst of wickets from Roz McNeill ended the Papatoetoe innigns at 166. Takapuna were never really troubled by the chase despite some wobbles along the way. Brooke James brought things home with 73*, combining nicely with Kate Irwin (40) in a 70-run partnership.
