Suburbs New Lynn 135 (Matt Gibson 6/32) & 10/1 trail Cornwall 253/5 (Sam Crooks 88, Dimithri Gallage 71) by 108 runs
At Cornwall Park on Saturday the home side, sitting at 7th place on the table and after some wins to end the season, put on a dominating display to leave Suburbs New Lynn in a hole, trailing by 108 runs at stumps. Batting first, Cornwall’s 253 was set up by Sam Crooks with 88 and Dimithri Gallage’s 71. In reply, Cornwall’s left arm quick Matt Gibson tore through the visitors with 6/32, continuing a great season for him. In their second dig, Suburbs had lost another wicket before stumps, still in arrears by 108 runs and looking for big innings from their batters next week.
Takapuna 141 trail Auckland University 150 (Angus Olliver 66, Jordan Sussex 5/39) & 31/0 by 40 runs
In a low scoring tussle at Onewa Domain, Auckland University just squeezed out first innings honours before extended their lead to 40 at stumps. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Uni found themselves in all sorts of bother at 33/5 with opening bowlers Jordan Sussex (5/39) and Daniel James (4/56) letting rip. They sunk further to 73/9 before an impressive rearguard from Angus Olliver, who smashed 5 fours and 5 sixes in his 66, lifted them to a respectable 150. In reply, Takapuna struggled to 28/3 before Mike Sclanders (47) rescued the innings somewhat. The resurrection didn’t last for long however as the Uni bowlers struck regular blows to castle Taka for 141, 9 runs in arrears. Mackenzie was the most impressive of the bowlers with 4/13. The teams will resume next week with Auckland University 40 runs in the lead in what will undoubtedly be a cracking day of cricket.
Parnell 196/7 trail Eden Roskill 219 (Hemadri Chakraborty 78, Nikith Perera 6/76) by 23 runs
In a 2nd vs. 3rd showdown at Shore Road, Eden Roskill elected to bat but found themselves in trouble early at 64/4. Hemadri Chakraborty resuscitated the innings with an aggressive 78 but Nikith Perera’s 6/76 kept Roskill at bay and they were bowled out for 219 after exactly 50 overs. Parnell ended the day 23 runs away from parity at 196/7; Flynn McGregor-Sumpter holding up their innings with 86 not out. All the Eden Roskill bowlers grabbed wickets but Sher Safi’s 3/27 stood out.
Papatoetoe 84 (Tendai Chitongo 4/34) & 35/0 trail North Shore 200 (Michael Olsen 49) by 81 runs
At beautiful Devonport Domain, North Shore pressed their home advantage over Papatoetoe with a dominating display. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Papatoetoe collapsed to 28/6 and never fully lifted themselves out of their hole, eventually folding for 84. Tendai Chitongo’s 4/34 did the majority of the damage with another good display from Rory Bessell (3/16), including the important scalp of Barrington Rowland for 0. North Shore also found life tough to begin with but Sam Hinds (35), Michael Olsen (49) and Joseph Moore (41) guarded against further collapse. They built their lead to 116 before being dismissed for 200. Batting again, Papatoetoe reached stumps at 35/0, still trailing by 81 runs but importantly, with all ten wickets in hand.
Kumeu 175 (Soliman Jaan 52, Louis Delport 5/69) & 27/0 trail East Coast Bays 222/5 dec (Cole Briggs 105, Ryan Harrison 53) by 20 runs
Sitting just behind Grafton United at 2nd place on the Tom Hellaby table, East Coast Bays are after a healthy win against 4th placed Kumeu at their homeground of Windsor Park. Kumeu got the first choice of conditions however, when they won the toss and elected to bat. Soliman Jaan (52) and Akash Christian (47) propped up the Kumeu innings, but regular strikes from (that man again) Louis Delport, who bagged 5/69, kept the Kumeu innings from crossing the 200 mark. Clearly seeking an outright win, Bays came out with guns blazing. After losing some early wickets, ACES batters Cole Briggs (105) and Ryan Harrison (53) blitzed their team into the lead and declared 47 runs ahead after just 33 overs with the total at 222/5. Kumeu’s openers then saw out the day, bringing the deficit down to just 20 with all ten wickets in hand. Expect more Bazball style play from Bays next week as they look for an outright win.
Waitakere 57/3 trail Birkenhead 259 (James Newman 66*, Anuradha Jayampathi 58) by 202 runs
In a somewhat more leisurely paced match at Te Atatu Park, the two bottom of the table teams battled it out under sunny skies. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Waitakere found an early breakthrough but were unable to trigger a Birkenhead collapse with good starts from the top and middle order, and an anchoring 58 from Jayampathi. James Newman’s counterattacking 66* then lifted Birkenhead to 259. Waitakere reached stumps at 57/3, Mayur Masand’s 3/13 doing the damage with a vicious new ball spurt.
Ellerslie 60/4 trail Howick Pakuranga 222 (Liam Winn 84, Akshay Sreenivasan 7/71) by 162 runs
Out at Lloyd Elsmore, the 3rd placed home team seek a big win in their quest for a top two finish. Winning the toss and batting, their effort was anchored around Liam Winn’s 84. Akshay Sreenivasan did his best to halt progress with a dominating 7-for (7/71) meaning Howick Pakuranga never really got away from Ellerslie. However, with 30 overs left to bat on day one, Howpak exerted enough pressure to prise out four Ellerslie wickets, including the important scalp of Henry Drillien for 38. Connah Thompson did most of the damage with 2/10.
Grafton 168/6 (Dylan Taylor 77) lead Hibiscus Coast 153 (Ramesh Wasam 82) by 15 runs
Up the road at Victor Eaves Park in beautiful Orewa, the home side found themselves on the back foot against top of the table Grafton. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Grafton found early inroads against Coast, including the dangerous Max O’Dowd, and didn’t let their foot off their neck. Ramesh Wasam was the only batter to offer proper resistance with an epic 82, lifting Coast to a respectable 153. Grafton’s Dylan Taylor played a similar role, anchoring their innings with 77 while wickets fell around him. Fortunately for Grafton, aggressive lower order runs from Taine Bayly (39) and Raja Sandhu (43*) elevated them into the lead and they ended on 168/6, 15 runs ahead and with a golden opportunity next week to push for an outright win.
Howick Pakuranga 315/8 (Amberly Parr 79*, Holly Topp 65) beat Papatoetoe 171 (Mansimran Kaur 4/33)
With a stacked team full of returning Auckland HEARTS and WhiteFerns stars, Howick Pakuranga were always going to be a tough proposition for Papatoetoe. Bowling first, the South Auckland club found themselves up against it early on, with Howick Pakuranga’s batters going on the charge. Holly Topp’s assault netted her 65 runs off just 48 balls, setting Howick up for a big total. HEARTS leg spinner Makayla Templeton counterattacked with three wickets, reducing Howick Pakuranga to 189/8 but an unbeaten 126-run partnership between Amberly Parr and Ayaan Lambat lifted them to a mammoth 315/8. In response, Papatoetoe never really got going, and apart from a couple of players getting starts, they folded for 171 in the 41st over. Wickets were shared around the Howick Pakuranga bowlers with Mansimran Kaur bagging 4/33.
Cornwall 188 (Katie Perkins 51) beat Takapuna 124 (Izzy Gaze 83) by 64 runs
At the inner city enclave of Cornwall Park, table topping powerhouses Cornwall and Takapuna clashed for ultimate supremacy. Losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Cornwall would have been hoping to set up a big total with a batting line-up chocka full of returning HEARTS players. There were some decent starts but Katie Perkins, once again, was the standout, bringing up another half century for her club. The Taka bowlers were on song though, particularly Roz McNeill and Kate Irwin, and regular strikes kept Cornwall contained. They were eventually dismissed for 188. Chasing the total proved tough for every Takapuna batter except Izzy Gaze, who went on an astonishing rampage. She watched her teammates, including HEARTS skipper Lauren Down, fall around her as she regularly found the boundary. Her solo effort needed a partner though, and eventually she ran out of luck. Her 83 accounted for two thirds of her team’s eventual total of 124. The next highest score was 10. Takapuna still top the table after this loss but Cornwall are gaining on them, rapidly.
Auckland University 136 beat Parnell 105 by 31 runs
In a low scorer at Thomas Bloodworth Park on Saturday, Auckland University managed to defend a middling total of 136 thanks to some sharp fielding and tight bowling. After being sent in, Uni overcame an early loss with Prue Catton and Naomi Matthews looking set at the crease and the score at 85/1. From there Parnell struck regular blows, with Renée Macmillan and Yaz Kareem netting three wickets each as Uni collapsed to 136 all out. Parnell were unable to string together any decent partnerships in reply and crashed to 105, short by 31 runs. Charlotte Sarsfield was the standout bowler with 2/15 off her 10 overs.
