In 1976 the Cricket Society (Auckland) Inc was formed by a group of cricket enthusiasts, it was at the time and remains today as the only cricket society within New Zealand. Its base is the Old Members Stand which sits behind the bowlers arm on the Outer Oval at Eden Park, the home of cricket in Auckland. The organisation has recently undergone some changes aligning itself more closely with the Auckland Cricket Association and as part of this has been renamed the Auckland Cricket Society and Supporters' Club.

The Auckland Cricket Society and Supporters Club is established with four main aims:

  • To act as the official supporters' club for the Auckland Aces and Hearts.
  • To provide an organisation linking cricket enthusiasts.
  • To support junior cricket through the Auckland Cricket Development Foundation.
  • To field both competitive and social cricket teams locally and on international tours.

To all Members

As part of the recent changes within the organisation the Old Members Pavilion is in the process of being rejuvenated. Because of the work being done it will not be available to members for the first home Auckland Aces game of the season starting on the 24th of November. The intention is all work will be complete to allow a reopening function on the first day of the Auckland Aces vs West Indies game to be held on the Outer Oval on the 5th of December. We hope as many members as possible will join us at the pavilion for that day.

Match Reports

One Day 2A Side
1st November vs Papatoetoe Punjab XI at Glover Park

After winning the toss and batting first the Society made steady progress, batsmen getting starts but failing to go on leaving the team 73/3 at drinks. Rod Turner and Andy Arnold lifted the rate after drinks and Matt Cowdrey continued the momentum lifting the score to 216/7 after 40 overs, Rod Turner finishing unbeaten on 86. Society captain Lawrence Stephens struck with the second ball to start the innings and lead an impressive Society bowling and fielding effort dismissing Papatoetoe for 108 in the 28th over. Lawrence Stephens 3/22, Dave Freeman 3/31 and Rob Sadler 2/3 the most successful of the bowlers. Bruce Rome must be mentioned as well for a spectacular diving boundary catch to dismiss one of the more dangerous Papatoetoe batsmen.

ACSSC v ECB8th November vs East Coast Bays at DB Windsor Park

Batting the Society first made swift progress with Matt Cowdrey striking 45 from 42 balls opening the innings. The middle order then continued the momentum, Andy Arnold with 37 from 20 balls, Cam Mackenzie 57 from 37 balls and Rod Turner 75 not out from 75 balls leading the charge to an imposing total of 271/5.  East Coast Bays started quickly but the Society slow bowlers strangled the scoring rate and created the pressure for wickets to fall. Dave Freeman with 4/57 from 10 overs and Rod Sadler with 1/29 from 10 overs did the damage in the middle overs. East Coast bays were finally dismissed for 163, Bruce Rome and Lawrence Stephens cleaning up the tail taking two wickets each.

15th November vs Papatoetoe Peach at Papatoetoe Recreation Ground

Again batting first the Society made slow but steady progress against pace from one end and spin from the other. Matt Cowdrey with 61 and Rod Turner with 31 retired hurt lifted the run rate and with Mike Clegg unbeaten on 66 after 40 overs the Society had compiled 209/7. From the first ball one of the Papatoetoe openers launched a savage attack on the Society bowling clubbing sixes and fours all around the ground. He brought up his hundred in the 13th over and retired after 20 overs on 130. The next highest scorer was 27 as Papatoetoe reached the target 6 wickets down giving the Society team their first loss of the season.

22nd November vs Mt Wellington at Hamlin Park

Elected to bat a weakened Society team were soon in trouble with wickets tumbling early leaving the team 44/5 after 12 overs. Bruce Rome with 61 and Mike Clegg with 40 steadied the innings but Mike's departure saw a batting collapse, the team all out for 145. Mt Wellington started quickly, targeting the short boundary at long on repeatedly striking balls from outside off over the leg side for fours and sixes. Woeful Society catching didn't help as Mt Wellington cruised to the target two down with 14 overs to spare.
