20 December - Twenty20 Round 3
Auckland has come out on top in a tight game against Wellington in the Women’s U-21 tournament at Lincoln that confirmed them as inaugural winners of the competition, and made it three in a row at this level.
Auckland set Wellington the challenging total of 160 for two and bowled well enough to defend that total, running out eventual victors by 19 runs.
After winning the toss, Wellington decided to take first crack with the ball against an in form Auckland batting line-up.
They would have been buoyed by the early wicket of Arlene Kelly but like so many times throughout the tournament Shannon Elliot and Maddie Green put on a substantial partnership for the second wicket.
Green was dismissed for a low score by her standards with 29. Elliot though was in blistering form and smashed six fours and one six on her way to 66.
Lauren Down finished off the innings for the defending champs adding 38 to Auckland’s cause.
In reply, Wellington would have been worried when they lost star performer Rachel Chin for four, but a second wicket partnership steadied the innings.
Maddy Chapman and Deanna Doughty put on 92 for the second wicket with Chapman striking a splendid 56 to give her side a chance.
When she and Doughty (47) were dismissed in quick succession Wellington lost their way finishing the innings on 141 for five.
Final points: Auckland 24, Northern Districts 19, Wellington 17, Canterbury and Central Districts 12, Otago 0

Round 2 - Auckland v Canterbury
Auckland have beaten Canterbury in a top of the table clash at the Women’s U-21 competition in Lincoln.
The bowlers set up the victory for the defending champions limiting the Canterbury to just 88 in their 20 overs. The chase proving no problem with Auckland easing to an eight wicket win.
Canterbury decided to set Auckland a total after winning the toss but lost the usually consistent Emma Hartland early. Hayley Aburn (14) and Hayley Jensen (23) helped their team to recover but when both batsmen were dismissed it quickly went wrong for Canterbury.
Credit must go to the Auckland bowlers, who kept the pressure up throughout the innings. Pick of the bowlers was Khusboo Patel who picked up figures of three for 12 from three overs.
With the way that the Auckland batting line-up had been firing so far in the competition there was little doubt they would make the required runs.
Sarah Elliot (29) and Arlene Kelly (14) got their side off to a great start at 34 without loss, When they were dismissed Auckland lost very little of its momentum, Maddie Green (18) and Lauren Down (20) showing their worth once again and leading Auckland to victory.
Auckland ended the one-sided contest by eight wickets with more than eight overs to spare.

Round 1 - Auckland v Central
Auckland have beaten Central Districts in the first round of Twenty/20 matches in the Women's U21 tournamnet at Lincoln.
After Auckland posted a big score, Central struggled to keep up with the required run rate and came up short by 45 runs.
Auckland chose to bat first and would have been a mixture of pleased and yet frustrated when they reflected on their total.
Opener Arlene Kelly got the defending champions off to a solid start as she scored a well-paced 24. Alongside her was star Captain Maddie Green. Green has been in brilliant touch throughout the tournament and continued her fine run by smashing 59 from 42 deliveries.
Lauren Down also contributed as she made 28 to help her team to finish at 152 for five at the end of 20 overs. A decent total, but it could have been so much worse for Central and so much better for Auckland. Central dismissed three batsmen through run outs, including the key wickets of Green and Down. Had there been better running between the wickets the total could have been a lot closer to 200.
In reply Central got off to a wonderful start with openers Hannah Nesbitt and Briar Cloake (14) putting on 48 for the first wicket. Nesbitt has been in blistering form so far this tournament and once again played an important innings for her team, scoring 52 from 56 deliveries.
However the run rate continued to climb for Central and with Nesbitt out it was obvious that they weren’t going to be able to put the runs on the board.
Anlo van de Venter played well for her unbeaten 30, but it was all to no avail. In the end Central were well off the pace, losing by 44 runs at 108 for two.
Despite the loss it was a great display of batting from both teams, Auckland though with just a little too much class on the day.

Auckland v Canterbury
The Auckland U-21 Women’s team completed a brilliant run chase to beat arch rivals Canterbury at Lincoln University.
Set a solid target of 188 for victory Auckland chased it down with ease to win by six wickets in the 40th over.
Canterbury were put in by Auckland and looking good for a big score from the outset. Opener Emma Heartland anchored the innings for the home team, playing right through the 50 overs to end up on 73 not out.
Many of her team mates made starts, but Heartland couldn’t form a substantial partnership with anyone, which in the end restricted Canterbury to 187 for eight.
Georgia Guy was the most expensive of the bowlers, but also the leading wicket taker for Auckland. Her ten overs went for 44 runs and picked up four wickets.
Canterbury would have been confident of defending their total, but weren’t prepared for the partnership that Sarah Carnachan and Shannen Elliot would put on for Auckland. The two openers put on an incredible 107 for the first wicket. Elliot made 25, while Carnachan smashed 62 to put their team in the box seat.
Captain Maddie Green carried on her good form and finished the game with an beaten 28 to lead Auckland to a six wicket victory with ten overs to spare.

17 December - Round 3
Auckland v Wellington
In the third round of the Women’s U-21 tournament in Canterbury, Wellington has shocked defending champions Auckland in a convincing win.
Chasing just 102 for victory, Wellington cruised to a four wicket win with 20 overs up their sleeves, thanks largely to a brilliant all-round performance from Rebecca Burns.
Auckland were put into bat and looked likely to put on a substantial partnership with many of the top order getting starts. Unfortunately for them though, none of these players kicked on and star captain Maddie Green was dismissed for eight, a crucial wicket for Wellington.
If it hadn’t been for extras Auckland would have been dismissed for a measly 80, but managed to scrape their way to 102 all out in the 35th over.
Sarah Carnachan top scored with 16, but couldn’t combat the impressive bowling from Wellington, especially Burns who bowled eight overs for 15 runs and took three wickets.
In reply Wellington would have been confident, but also wary of an Auckland bowling line up which has been in devastating form so far this tournament.
Yet again captain fantastic Rachel Chin got her side off to a solid start, but when she was dismissed for 26 Wellington knew they had to form just one decent partnership to really take the game away from Wellington.
Thamsyn Newton (22) and star with the ball Burns (27*) rose to the occasion for their team and combined for 49 to lead their team to a four wicket win.
Many would say it was an unexpected result as Auckland have looked good the whole tournament, but it sure will make for an interesting finish to the competition.

15 December - Round 2
Auckland v Northern Districts
After a rainy start in the second round of the National Women's Under 21 tournament, Auckland has beaten Northern Districts with ease - the defending champs chasing down Northern’s total in just the 23rd over.
Northern won the toss and decided to get some runs on the board. It started off okay with opener Heidi Arndt playing sensibly for her 26, but she couldn’t find anyone to forge a partnership with.
Rain soon forced the players off the pitch, but when they returned in gloomy conditions, Auckland made the most of it and devastated the Northern top order with an impressive bowling display.
It looked like the innings was coming to an end, but some resilience from the tail ensured that Northern would be in with a chance when it came to their turn to bowl. In the end Northern bravely clawed their way to 107 for nine.
Chasing such a low total Auckland knew that they would need only one batsman to score well to take the game away from Northern. Many players made starts, but Maddie Green once again helped the Auckland team to another win and played some beautiful drives on her way to 37.
In the end Northern’s total proved to be not enough and Auckland were too good, chasing down the total with six wickets in hand.

14 December - Round 1
Auckland U21 v Otago U21
Otago won the toss and decided to bowl, but failed to make an early break though with Auckland putting on 69 for the first wicket.
The runs didn’t stop there though with six of the top seven batters making valuable contributions. Sarah Carnachan top scored for Auckland with 41, closely followed by captain Maddie Green with 38. At the end of 46 overs the Northerners had posted Otago a target of 235 to win.
In reply Otago got off to just the start they needed as Megan Mason and Caitlin Blakely put on 28 together before Mason was dismissed for seven. Blakely went on to make 26 and found help from Sarah Osborne (20) and Kylie Crowley (23).
Auckland though were too good and Arlene Kelly stole the show. In the 32nd over Kelly picked up the tournament’s first hatrick, including the crucial wicket of Crowley. This amazing passage of play made it near impossible for Otago to reach their target and they were eventually dismissed in the 38th over for 121.
It was a great fielding display by the defending champions with three run outs. Unsurprisingly Kelly had the best of the bowlers figures with three for 31 from seven overs.
