Southern Trust National Club Championships 2010
Cornwall Park
The creme of New Zealand's club cricketers descends on Cornwall Park from April 7th - 12th to battle it out for the title of National Club Champion.
A tournament hosted and run by the Cornwall Cricket Club, it includes the champions from each major Association and the line up this year incorporates the following teams:
Auckland - Parnell
Canterbury - East Christchurch Shirley
Central Districts - Mainstream Freyberg
Northern Districts - Mount Manganui
Otago - University Grange
Wellington - Karori
The tournament consists of five day's of round robin play with a finals day on Sunday 12th April.
There are some familiar names in the team lists with Blackcaps Scott Styris and Gareth Hopkins down to appear for Parnell, Daniel Flynn for Mount Managnui, Michael Papps, Ryan Burson and Brandon Hiini for East Christchurch Shirley, and James McMillan and Anthony Bullick for University Grange.

Final
University Grange (Otago) 101 (I Butler 37) lost to Karori (Wellington) 102/4 (S Allen 53*) by six wickets.
Wellington's Karori have comprehensively beaten Otago's University Grange to claim the 2010 Southern Trust National Cricket Club Championship. University Grange won the toss and elected to bat first and were immediately under pressure from a Wellington side that came out firing. Aaron Redmond went early through a spectacular catch taken by Stephen Murdoch and when in form batsman Michael Bracewell fell soon after things began to swing in Karori's favour. Only a saving 37 from Ian Butler, batting at five, helped the Otago side reach three figures, University Grange eventually being dismissed for 101. Karori's Simon Allen got Karori's run chase off to flying start and his composed innings of 53 not out off 54 balls led the Wellington side to 102/4 and with it the 2010 Championship.
3rd & 4th Playoff
East Christchurch Shirley (Canterbury) 260 (M Peacock 43, M Papps 38, T Muir 36, T Papps 34, C Turkington 4-58) defeated Mainstream Freyberg (Central Districts) 172 (D Raynor 42) by 88 runs.
Canterbury's East Christchurch Shirley has defeated Central Districts Mainstream Freyberg by 88 runs to claim 3rd place at the Southern Trust National Cricket Club Championship. After winning the toss and electing to bat first East Christchurch Shirley amassed 260 all out following useful contributions from Michael Peacock (43), Michael Papps (38), Tim Muir (36) and Tim Papps (34). In reply, only Dom Raynor (42) got a start for Mainstream Freyberg and the Central Districts side were eventually all out for 172.
5th & 6th Playoff
Parnell (Auckland) 98 (T Goodin 5-41, D Busch 3-28) lost to Mt Maunganui (Northern Districts) 99/9 (S Pasupati 4-35, J Walsh 4-34) by one wicket.
Northern Districts' Mt Maunganui battled to a one wicket win over Auckland's Parnell to claim 5th place at the Southern Trust National Cricket Club Championship. Parnell, who elected to bat first, had no answer for the strike force of Tony Goodin (5-41) and Dean Busch (3-28) who picked up eight wickets between them to help dismiss Parnell for a paltry 98. But Parnell were never going to lie down and Shoruban Pasupati (4-35) and James Walsh (4-34) combined to take eight wickets between them and have Mt Maunganui in real trouble at 84/9. But it was to be Tony Goodin's day. Goodin and Chris Atkinson put together a 28 run ninth wicket partnership to guide Mt Maunganui to 99/9 and with it 5th place in the Championship.

Day Five
East Christchurch Shirley (Canterbury) 243/7 (M Papps 62, B Hiini 49, S Pawson 39, T Muir 36) defeated Karori (Wellington) 163 (L Edwards 40, J Sewell 31, Vermeulen 4-21) by 80 runs.
Canterbury's East Christchurch Shirley ended Karori's unbeaten run through the tournament with an 80 run victory over the Wellington side. Michael Papps (62) once again featured with the bat for East Christchurch scoring his third half century of the tournament and with a useful 49 from Brandon Hiini East Christchurch reached 243/7 after 50 overs. In reply Karori struggled early and were in trouble at 4/41 and with Michael Vermeulen (4-21) finding some form with the ball East Christchurch dismissed Karori for just 163.
Mt Maunganui (Northern Districts) 205/8 (M Golding 56*, P Drysdale 47, L Jackson 35*) defeated Mainstream Freyberg (Central Districts) 165 (W Murrie 49, D Busch 3-25) by 40 runs.
Northern Districts' Mt Maunganui notched up their first win of the championship with an impressive performance defeating Central Districts' Mainstream Freyberg by 40 runs. Mt Maunganui, sent in to bat, were in all sorts of trouble at 8/2 but opener Peter Drysdale (47) steadied the ship and a well crafted 56 not out by Matt Golding saw Mt Maunganui through to 205/8 after 50 overs. In reply Mainstream Freyberg looked solid early but an excellent bowling spell from Dean Busch (3-25) turned the match and Freyberg were eventually all out for 165.
Parnell (Auckland) 260 (C Barnes 53, A McLean 51, M Bracewell 3-33, B McCormack 3-42) lost to University Grange (Otago) 263/6 (M Bracewell 151*, A Redmond 37, M Collie 30) by four wickets.
University Grange booked their place in the final after a scintillating innings from Michael Bracewell helped the Otago side claim a four wicket victory over Auckland's Parnell. Parnell posted 260 as Chey Barnes (53) and Angus McLean (51) notched up a pair of half centuries. But it was to be Michael Bracewell's day. Bracewell, who picked up 3-33 with the ball, smashed an unbeaten 151 off 136 balls including 17 fours and five sixes to guide University Grange to a four wicket win and a spot in the final.
Day Four
Karori (Wellington) 171/9 (H Boam 40, S Pasupati 4-18) defeated Parnell (Auckland) 148 (A Mclean 38, L Edwards 3-18) by 23 runs.
Wellington's Karori booked their spot in Sundays final with their fourth victory of the championship defeating Auckland's Parnell by 23 runs. A superb bowling performance from Parnell's Shoruban Pasupati (4-18) helped restrict Karori to 171/9. The Auckland side was unable to capitalise as Karori's Lee Edwards bagged 3-18 to help dismissed Parnell for 148.
Mt Maunganui (Northern Districts) 183/9 (M Golding 47, B McCormack 3-32, M Patel 3-37) lost to University Grange 185/4 (S Wells 44, M Bracewell 39) by six wickets.
Otago's University Grange notched up win number three with a six wicket win over Northern Districts' Mt Maunganui. Mt Maunganui won the toss and elected to bat first and looked solid until Ben McCormack took two wickets in his first over to put the Northern Districts side back under pressure. McCormack picked up another wicket to finish with 3-32 and with the support of Mayank Patel (3-37) University Grange dismissed Mt Maunganui for 183. University Grange's opener Michael Bracewell (39) once again got the Otago side's run chase off to a reasonable start and a timely 44 of 43 balls from Sam Wells saw University Grange comfortably reach 185/4.
East Christchurch Shirley (Canterbury) 207 (T Papps 68, M Papps 42, D Fulton 4-29, W Murrie 3-26) lost to Mainstream Freyberg (Central Districts) 211/6 (D Cleaver 68, L Murray 56, W Murrie 33, J Roberts 3-32) by four wickets.
Central Districts' Mainstream Freyberg kept their finals hopes alive with a four wicket victory over Canterbury's East Christchurch Shirley. East Christchurch Shirley's decision to bat first looked like it might have been the wrong one when Scott Pawson was out caught Fulton bowled Small off the second ball of the match but an 89 run second wicket partnership between Tim Papps (68) and Michael Papps (42) helped ensure East Christchurch would post a reasonable 207 all out. Mainstream Freyberg looked solid from the start with useful knocks from openers Luke Murray (56) and Will Murrie (33) and an excellent 68 from Dane Cleaver saw Freyberg home to secure their second win of the championship.
Day Three
University Grange (Otago) 308/8 (M Bracewell 135, A Redmond 64, S Wells 32, A Bullick 30, W Murrie 3-48) defeated Mainstream Freyberg (Central Districts) 158 (D Cleaver 54, M Patel 3-19) by 150 runs.
Otago's University Grange secured their second win of the championship with a dominant performance over Central Districts' Mainstream Freyberg. Opener's Michael Bracewell (135) and Aaron Redmond (64) got University Grange's innings off to a flying start with a 157 run partnership for the first wicket. Bracewell going on to hit an excellent 135 and with late contributions from Sam Wells (32) and Anthony Bullick (30) University posted a very useful 308/8. Mainstream Freyberg could not find the same form that saw them through to victory yesterday and with only Dane Cleaver (54) getting a start they were all out for just 158.
East Christchurch Shirley (Canterbury) 249/7 (M Papps 90, T Papps 50) defeated Parnell (Auckland) 210/9 (S Styris 50, W Brittain 39, R Burson 4-36) by 39 runs.
East Christchurch Shirley recorded consecutive wins in the tournament defeating Parnell by 39 runs. Batting first the Papps' brothers were in fine form with Michael scoring 90 and Tim with 50 as they combined for a 137 run partnership for the second wicket. The total proved too much for Parnell whose hopes were dashed when Scott Styris (50) was dismissed at a crucial stage in the chase. Ryan Burson was the star with the ball sneering 4-36 off his 10 overs. Parnell managed to bat out their 50 overs but never truly threatened the East Christchurch Shirley total.
Karori (Wellington) 420/5 (S Allen 210, T Blundell 59, S Murdoch 55, H Templeton 32) defeated Mt Maunganui (Northern Districts) 275 (S Kearns 108, P Drysdale 39, B Parlane 32, J Sewell 5-66) by 146 runs.
Wellington's Karori continued their unbeaten run with a comprehensive win over Northern Districts' Mt Maunganui. Karori, sent into bat, blazed their way to a mammoth 420/5 as Mt Maunganui had no answer to Karori's opening partnership of Simon Allen (210) and Stephen Murdoch (55). The pair smashed 161 for the first wicket and Allen continued the onslaught with Tom Blundell (59) until he fell for 210 off just 149 balls. Struggling Mt Maunganui looked in the hunt following an excellent 108 by Sheldon Kearns but a great second spell from Karori's Jarrod Sewell (5-66) ensure the Northern Districts side was toppled for 275.
Day Two
(42 over match) East Christchurch Shirley (Canterbury) 167/6 (M Papps 76*, P Drysdale 3-44) defeated Mt Maunganui (Northern Districts) 134 (B Popli 36, M Peacock 4-23, R Burson 4-25) by 33 runs.
Canterbury's East Christchurch Shirley turned around their disappointing loss on day one with a 33 run victory over Northern Districts' Mt. Maunganui. East Christchurch Shirley, sent into bat, were in trouble early at 36/2 but an unbeaten 76 by Michael Papps saw them through to 167/6. Mt Maunganui looked in the hunt at 100/4 but Michael Peacock (4-23) and Ryan Burson (4-25) combined to claim eight wickets between them and help dismiss Mt Maunganui for 134.
University Grange (Otago) 170/8 (C Smith 61, S Chan 4-40) lost to Karori (Wellington) 171/1 (S Baker 68*, S Murdock 47, T Blundell 23*) by nine wickets.
Wellington's Karori continued their march to the top of the table with a nine wicket win over Otago's University Grange. University Grange, sent into bat, battled through to 170/8 following a saving 61 by Craig Smith. Sunnie Chan once again impressing with the ball for Karori picking up 4-40. Karori then made short work of their target as captain Simon Baker (68*) and Stephen Murdock (47) put on 116 for the first wicket to lead Karori through to 171/1 and their second nine wicket win of the championship.
Parnell (Auckland) 186 (K Bunting 62, A Mclean 38, C Turkington 5-24) lost to Mainstream Freyberg (Central Districts) 187/7 (L Murray 60, D Raynor 37*, S Pasupati 5-44) by three wickets.
Central Districts' Mainstream Freyberg notched up their first win of the championship with a three wicket win over Auckland's Parnell. Parnell, sent into bat, got off to a great start with opener Kirk Bunting (62) registering his second half century of the tournament and were looking comfortable at 123/2. But Chris Turkington tore through Parnell's lower order picking up 5-24 to help dismiss the Auckland side for 186. Captain Luke Murray's 60 provided the backbone of Freyberg's run chase and despite an excellent bowling performance from Parnell's Shoruban Pasupati (5-44) Freyberg reached 187/7 to claim their first victory of the championship.
Day One
(45 over match) Mt Maunganui (Northern Districts) 124 (M Golding 26, P Drysdale 24, C Rope 3-16) lost to Parnell (Auckland) 125/1 (K Bunting 66*, C Rope 33) by nine wickets.
Parnell put together a dominant performance to cruise to a nine wicket victory over Mt Maunganui on day one. Mt Maunganui, sent in to bat by Parnell, lost too many early wickets as Parnell's James Walsh and Scott Styris spearheaded the attack and with Peter Drysdale (24) and Matt Golding (26) the only batsmen to get a start Mt Maunganui were bowled out for 124. Cameron Rope the pick of the bowlers for Parnell as he cleaned up the tail with 3-16. Parnell, led by an unbeaten 66 from Kirk Bunting, made short work of their target to reach 125 for the loss of 1 wicket.
Mainstream Freyberg (Central Districts) 76 lost to Karori (Wellington) 78/1 (S Baker 38, S Murdoch 23*) by nine wickets.
Wellington's Karori sit top of the table with a healthy net run rate after they claimed a nine wicket win over Mainstream Freyberg on day one. Karori won the toss and sent Freyberg into bat and made a break through in the second over of the day. Freyberg continued to struggle losing wickets at regular intervals to eventually be bundled out for 76. Stephen Murdoch (23*) and Simon Baker (38) got Karori's run chase off to a good start with a 61 run partnership for the first wicket before Tom Blundell joined Murdoch at the crease to help Karori ease through to 78/1.
(41 over match) University Grange (Otago) 206 (A Hore 75, M Bracewell 31, T Muir 4-38, R Burson 3-33) defeated East Christchurch Shirley 203/6 (T Papps 81) by three runs.
University Grange battled through to a three run victory over East Christchurch Shirley in a hotly contested match played on Cornwall Park number 3. University Grange, who won the toss and elected to bat, got off to a great start as Andrew Hore (75) and Michael Bracewell (31) put on 95 runs for the first wicket. East Christchurch Shirley's Ryan Burson (3-33) and Tim Muir (4-38) then combined to take seven wickets between them and help dismiss University Grange for 206. Despite an excellent 81 by opener Tim Papps East Christchurch Shirley could not keep the score ticking over and in the end fell three runs short of victory finishing on 203/6.
