Girls NZCT National Tournament Results 2008

Day 1- Monday 15th December, 2008

Burnside High School v Epsom Girls' Grammar School

Burnside 103/9 (Frances Mackay 41, Lucy Foote 20, Maddy Green 3-10, Roseanne Cox 2-9) lost to Epsom 104/8 (Maddy Green 37, Frances Mackay 2-11, Jessica Hastings 2-20) by two wickets.

This was a cliff hanger of a match. Epsom won the toss and put Burnside into bat on a greenish pitch in heavy overcast conditions. Although captain and opener Frances Mackay lead from the front with an accomplished 41, only Lucy Foote with 20, could support her in them reaching a total of 103/9 after their allotted 40 overs. The best of the Epsom bowlers were Maddy Green with three wickets and Roseanne Cox with two. In reply Epsom lost two quick wickets, but Maddy Green, who had a very good double, held them together with 37, until with six overs to go a rush of wickets required their tailenders to see them through to victory in the 39th over. Frances Mackay and Jessica Hastings both took two wickets.

Baradene College v New Plymouth Girls' High School

Baradene 53 (Alexandra Hurley 32, Kate Broadmore 5-12, Brooke Sim 2-13, Megan Washington 2-21) lost to New Plymouth 54/0 (Kate Broadmore 21*, Kirsty Street 25*) by ten wickets.

Baradene in their first final were up against New Plymouth who have won the five previous NZCT finals. New Plymouth won the toss and asked Baradene to bat. They were quickly in trouble against the very accurate New Plymouth attack, spearheaded by Central Districts' Hinds bowler Kate Broadmore, who had the outstanding figures of 5/12. She was well supported by Megan Washington and captain Brooke Sim who both captured two wickets. Only Alexandra Hurley, with a resolute 32, stood out in their team score of 53 made in 21 overs. New Plymouth made short work of scoring the runs with Kate Broadmore, in the action again, and Kirsty Street knocking off the runs without the loss of a wicket.

Day 2 - Tuesday 16th December, 2008

Baradene College v Waikato Diocesan School

Waikato Diocesan School 121/7 (Victoria Kirisome 2/43, Lucy Carter 2/7) lost to Baradene College 122/9 (Danielle McFayden 23, Hannah Beatson 3/14) by one wicket.

Pool B saw the closest encounter of the round with Baradene College narrowly defeating Waikato Diocesan, scoring the winning runs in the 39th over with one wicket standing. Waikato batted first and apart from an accomplished 35 by Natalie Dodd they found runs hard to come by and at 40 overs had managed 121/7. Victoria Kirisome and Lucy Carter were the best of the Baradene bowlers.
Baradene then had to face the same intensity of bowling and fielding from Waikato, including captain Hannah Beatson with a competitive 3/14. With Baradene nine wickets down, every run of the last few required was loudly cheered, as the last pair got them home in a nailbiting finish. Best of the Baradene batsmen was Danielle McFayden with a patient 23.

Epsom Girls' Grammar School v Wellington Girls' College

Epsom Girls' Grammar School 182/7 (Maddy Green 57, Lucille Matthews 58no, Penny Roy 3/14, Kayla Edwards 3/32) defeated Wellington Girls' College 68 (Roseanne Cox 3/7, Monica Stone 2/9, Ellen Tocher 2/17) by 114 runs.

Epsom Girls' Grammar were put into bat by Wellington Girls' College, and after the loss of two early wickets Wellington's decision to bowl first seemed the right one. However, Maddy Green and captain Lucille Matthews combined in a productive third-wicket stand of 114 with both players reaching half centuries. This set the platform for a total of 182/7. Penny Roy and Kayla Edwards both bowled well to take three wickets apiece.

In reply Wellington struggled and was all out in the 33rd over for a modest 68. Most of the wickets were shared between Roseanne Cox, Monica Stone and Ellen Tocher who all had economical returns.

Day 3 - Wednesday 17th December

Epsom Girls' Grammar School v Havelock North High School

Havelock North High School 99 (Amy Foster 33, Roseanne Cox 4/3, Monica Stone 3/20) lost to Epsom Girls' Grammar School 101/7 (Lucille Matthews 42no, Amy Foster 2/27, Olivia Gregory 3/13) by three wickets.

This was a close encounter befitting a match that determined the final placings in pool A. A win to Epsom and they were in the finals, a win to Havelock North and it would depend on a runs v wickets differential which would have also included Burnside. However, with eight balls to spare Epsom were able to creep passed Havelock North's tally thanks to an intelligent knock from captain Lucille Matthews who guided her team to victory with 42 not out. Chasing Havelock North's total of 99, of which captain Amy Foster scored 33, Epsom got through to 101/7 in the 39th over. Bowling for Epsom Roseanne Cox bowled very tightly to take 4/3 and Monica Stone secured 3/20. For Havelock North Amy Foster took two and Olivia Gregory three wickets.

Baradene College v St Hilda's Collegiate School

St Hilda's Collegiate School 114 (Emma Spratt 40, Alexandra Hurley 4/19, Victoria Fahey 2/21, Katie Johnson 2/11) lost to Baradene College 118/2 (Alexandra Hurley 43, Imogen Temm 21, Danielle McFayden 27no, Amelia Weir 2/47) by eight wickets.

Asked to bat first St Hilda's accumulated 114 in their allotted overs. Best of their batsmen was Emma Spratt who scored an attacking 40. The wickets for Baradene were shared between Victoria Fahey, Katie Johnson and Alexandra Hurley who took a notable 4/19. Baradene were untroubled in chasing down their target in the 27th over for the loss of just two wickets. Co-captains Danielle McFayden and Imogen Temm, and Alexandra Hurley, who had a very good double, were the main contributors. Amelia Weir took both the wickets for St Hilda's.

Epsom won the toss and asked New Plymouth to bat. After the loss of an early wicket New Plymouth adopted a cautious approach against the tight bowling of Epsom and at 20 overs had reached a sound 50/1. The drinks break seemed to flick the switch on the scoring rate as New Plymouth picked up the pace. Kate Broadmore again completed the tremendous feat of anchoring the batting by batting through the innings. She had very good partnerships with Maree Heal and Brooke Sim which saw them amass a very useful 175/4 after their allotted 40 overs. Epsom were under immediate pressure and none of their batsmen was able to get on top of the accurate New Plymouth attack. They were finally dismissed for 71 in the 37th over. Wickets for New Plymouth were shared between Victoria Hill, Brooke Sim, Kate Baxter and Maree Heal. This victory gave New Plymouth their 6th consecutive title in the NZCT Girls' Cup an outstanding achievement and unsurpassed record in secondary record sport.
Playoff 3rd/4th Burnside High School v Baradene College
Baradene College; 67 (Jessica Hastings 6-10) lost to Burnside High School; 70/3(Frances Mackay 28*, Lucy Foote 25*)
Baradene were asked to bat first and managed to get through to 67 in the 31st over thanks to an 8th wicket stand of 48 between Alisha Lovrich and Jade Whitley. At 7/17 in the 11th over they had been in dire straits before these two put up their resistance. For Burnside Jessica Hastings was outstanding with her medium pacers returning the amazing figures of 6/10. She was well supported by Frances Mackay who took 2/7.
