Auckland A 2011/12

Auckland win Provincial A tournament

Mcintosh and Raval lead A's to comfortable victory

Auckland have been crowned National Provincial A champions after easily beating bottom placed Central Districts by eight wickets in the final round of Twenty20 cricket at Lincoln today.

They completed the tournament with three wins from five 50-over matches and were unbeaten their three Twenty20 encounters to finish with a table topping 22 points.

Again it was the Auckland top order who proved to be the difference with opener Tim McIntosh belting 64 off 45 balls and number three batsman Jeet Ravel lashing 70 off 37 as they cruised past Central’s total with four overs to spare.  Batting first, Central made 156 for seven with Dean Robinson striking 42 off 19 deliveries.  The wickets were shared between Auckland bowlers Donovan Grobbelaar, Bhupinder Singh and Ajaz Patel who took two apiece.  The reply was set up by a 129 runs partnership for the second wicket between McIntosh and Ravel with McIntosh smashing a six and a four to take Auckland’s total through to 160 for two in 16 overs.

Wellington beat Canterbury by 21 runs, taking their points tally to 22 – just one behind winners Auckland.  Michael Papps (36), Stephen Murdoch (38) and Barry Rhodes (30*) made useful contributions to ensure Wellington posted a competitive 159 for six.  Canterbury got off to a decent start in reply and at 71 for two looked in control but the wicket of Todd Astle for 30 sparked a collapse that saw them lose their next eight wickets for 67 runs.  Henry Nicholls did his best with 51 but lacked support from the rest of the team.  Rhodes backed up his good batting with three for 17 while Niranjan Naguleswaran took three for 26.

Northern Districts finished the tournament on a high, beating Otago by six wickets to secure third spot in the tournament.  Otago batted first and with the exception of Hamish Rutherford who struck 43 they struggled against the accurate bowling unit as they were all-out for 123. James Baker and Brent Arnel both returned figures of two for 20 while Jono Boult took two for 22.  The run chase got off to a shaky start with both openers going cheaply before Daryl Mitchell (54) and Brook Hatwell (47) combined for a third wicket stand of 90 runs.  Despite losing both batsmen towards the end of the innings they went on to reach 127 for four in 19.2 overs.

Auckland and Wellington won both of their Twenty20 matches to collect the full six points available on the penultimate day of the National Provincial A tournament in Lincoln.

They are now the only two teams capable of winning the competition with only one round to play and a maximum of three points on offer. Auckland are top with 20 points just ahead of Wellington who have 19 with third placed Northern Districts a further three points adrift on 16.

Auckland twice chased won sizable totals with their opening combination of Tim McIntosh and Neal Parlane proving the difference on both occasions.  The pair put on 104 in their first match against Otago to ensure their team reached 185 for seven off 19.5 overs before setting a solid platform of 51 against Canterbury to help them hit 168 for four in 19.3 overs.  In two innings McIntosh struck 95 and Parlane a hefty 107 while Bhupinder Singh took three wickers and was Auckland’s the most economical bowler across both matches.

Round 7 - Auckland v Canterbury (Twenty20)

Auckland have beaten Canterbury by six wickets in a close match in the Provincial A tournament.

Needing 166 for victory Auckland stayed calm to complete the chase with three balls to spare and gain bragging rights over their red and black rivals.

Canterbury were put in by Auckland and looked unconvincing at the crease for the majority of the innings. Four of their top five batsmen were out in the teens and nobody looked like they were going to go on to a decent score.

It took until the middle and lower-order for anyone to do something noteworthy. Matt McEwan (28) and Carl Frauenstein (30*) gave Canterbury a much better total than anyone had expected with some powerful hitting at the end of the innings.

At the end of 20 overs Canterbury were eight wickets down with 165 on the board. Mitchell McClenaghan and Bhupinder Singh took three wickets a piece in a tight bowling display from Auckland.

In reply Auckland got off to a good start thanks to openers Tim McIntosh and Neal Parlane. The pair put on 51 for the first wicket before Parlane was out for 30 from just 14 balls. McIntosh went on and top scored for his team with 46 from 36.

Auckland continued to make their way towards the target, not taking too many risks and only losing the occasional wicket along the way. It was a ploy that proved successful as Dane Hakaraia (35) led his team to victory after 19.3 overs with six wickets in hand.

Canterbury A 165/8 (C Frauenstein 30*, B Singh 3/31, M McClenaghan 3/32) lost to Auckland A 168/4 (T McIntosh 46, D Hakaraia 35*, N Parlane 30, J Raval 28) by six wickets.

Round 6 - Auckland v Otago

Auckland have beaten Otago by three wickets in the Provincial A tournament, having chased down a substantial total with one ball to spare. Needing 182 for victory, Auckland made a great start to their innings and managed to show enough quality down the order to pick up a win in their first round of Twenty20 games.

Auckland decided to take first crack at the Otago batting line-up and had immediate success, dismissing Michael Bracewell first ball of the innings. Next to go was Hamish Rutherford for 13, but that would be the last of the celebrations for many overs for Auckland.

Ryan Duffy found some form as he played sensibly to make 53 from 48 deliveries. Out there with him was Daryl Broom who smashed an unbeaten 77 from 45 balls. Auckland were relieved when they finally sent Duffy packing, but their reprieve was a short one as Otago Captain Iain Robertson came out and pummelled the bowling attack. Robertson smashed an unbeaten 42 from just 17 deliveries to help Otago finish with the substantial total of 181 for three.

Auckland knew that they had to get off to a good start to have any chance and that’s exactly what happened. It was the Neal Parlane of old as he crunched 77 from 52 deliveries. Alongside him was Tim McIntosh who keeps performing in this tournament as he made a valuable 49.

That set the platform for Auckland and 31 from Dusan Hakaraia got them even closer to their target. However just when it looked like they were going to get their comfortably, wickets started to tumble. Needing eight off the last over, Otago picked up wickets off the first two balls to really intensify the situation. Donovan Grobbelar though was not going to let this get away from Auckland as he smashed a six next ball to ease Auckland’s worries and see his side to victory.

Ian Butler did everything he could for the Southerners, but even his figures of three for 21 from four couldn’t see his side home.

Otago A 181/3 (D Broom 71*, I Robertson 42*, R Duffy 53) lost to Auckland A 185/7 (N Parlane 77, T McIntosh 49,D Hakaraia 31, I Butler 3/21) by three wickets.

Round 5 - Auckland v Northern Districts

Northern have beaten Auckland by 48 runs in the Provincial A Tournament being held at Lincoln.

Having scraped their way to 233 for nine, Northern then put in an accurate performance with the ball to secure bragging rights over neighbours Auckland.

Northern opted to bat first and received bits and pieces from their top-order. Michael Dodunski was the best of them on his way to 33, but it was the middle order who were the backbone of the innings.

Daryl Mitchell put on 35 for his team and Jono Boult also made a start with 29.

Brandin Hiini though was the best of the batsmen with just 38. It was evidence of a batting display where no one really got going, but a number of starts got Central to a defendable total.

At the end of 50 overs Central finished on 233 with one wicket to spare.

It was a combined effort from the Auckland bowlers, but the most economical was Lochie Ferguson who picked up the impressive figures of two for 23 from ten overs.

In reply Auckland were similar to Northern in regards to the fact that their batsmen could only manage starts and not push on to bigger scores.

The first of such players was Tim McIntosh who made 42 from 60. The next three batsmen were all dismissed cheaply, but the middle-order stood up for Auckland.

Dusan Hakaraia and Marc Ellison tried to get their team back into the match with scores of 30 and 40, but again couldn’t convert their starts into big totals.

In the end Auckland lost wickets far too regularly and ended well short of their target. After 45.1 overs Northern landed the killer blow to dismiss Auckland for 185.

The tournament moves onto the Twenty20 component of the competition tomorrow with two matches followed but a final round on Monday.

Northern 233/9 (B Hiini 38, D Mitchell 35, M Dodunski 33, M McClenaghan 3/50, L Ferguson 2/23) defeated Auckland 185 (T McIntosh 42, M Ellison 40, D Hakaraia 30, J Baker 3/51) by 48 runs.

Round 4 - Auckland v Cenral Districts

Auckland made light work of Central Districts as they recorded a 102 run win in the Provincial A tournament.

Chasing 259 for victory, Central struggled early on and lost wickets regularly to eventually be all out for 156 after 41.2 overs.

Auckland were put in by Central and started strong thanks to Tim McIntosh who kept up his fine form after his ton against Wellington. He stuck around until the 35th over when he was dismissed for 58.

The rest of the top order all got starts, but failed to convert until Dusan Hakaraia took control of the Auckland innings with a sensible 56.

With ten overs to go it was time to lift the run rate and Auckland’s man to do this was Donovan Grobbelar who smashed 40 from 28 deliveries.

With just two balls to go in the innings Auckland were all out, but had posted a decent total of 258 for Central to chase.

For Central Bevan Small was chief wicket destroyer as he finished with figures of four for 39 from ten overs.

The chase stalled early for Central with the two openers dismissed cheaply. Greg Todd (31) and Will Young (30) seemed to be bringing Central back into the match, but that hope was short lived as both failed to go on to bigger scores.

From that point on there wasn’t many positive moments in the Central innings.

Carl Cachopa made 17, but there wasn’t enough depth in the batting line-up and eventually Central were all out in the 42nd over for just 156.

It was a good all-round bowling display from Auckland, but best figures belonged to Lockie Ferguson who grabbed figures of three for 30 from eight overs.

Auckland 258 (T McIntosh 58, D Hakaraia 56, D Grobbelaar 40, B Small 4/39, S Smidt 3/29) defeated Central 156 (G Todd 31, W Young 30, L Ferguson 3/30, M McClenaghan 3/36) by 103 runs.

Round 3 - Auckland v Wellington

Tim McIntosh has led Auckland to a four wicket win against Wellington in the Provincial A tournament.  Auckland restrained Wellington to 217 and completed a sensible batting display to take the points against the lads from the capital.

Wellington opted to bat first and were in trouble early on. At 51 for five Wellington looked like they might struggle to reach triple figures, but a strong performance from the middle and lower order made sure that the chase would be an interesting one.

Mark Houghton was the top scorer for Wellington as he made a crucial 53 from 77. He found help from the unlikely source of Kuggeleijn  - the number ten batsmen – who made 39. It was a combined effort by the Auckland bowlers, with Bhupinder Singh and Mitchell McClenaghan both grabbing three wicket bags and Dean Bartlett also bagging a pair.

In reply Tim McIntosh dominated proceedings for Auckland. He shared in a crucial 129 run fourth wicket partnership with Dusan Hakaraia who bludgeoned a lightning 61 off just 49 balls, and was there at the end to finish proceedings with consecutive boundaries to bring up his hundred and win the game.

His 108 came off 110 balls and included 16 fours and one six. He lost five partners along the way, but still managed to anchor Auckland to a four wicket win after 38.2 overs.

Wellington A 217/9 (M Houghton 53, Kuggeleijn 39*, M Taylor 39, B Singh 3/25, M McClenaghan 3/26) lost to Auckland A 219/6 (T McIntosh 108*, D Hakaraia 61) by four wickets.

Round 2 - Auckland v Canterbury

Canterbury have completed an easy run chase to beat Auckland by six wickets in the Provincial A tournament being held at Lincoln. Canterbury won the toss and put Auckland in to bat. It turned out to be the right decision, as they ripped through the heart of their rivals batting line-up early.

At 29 for five it looked like the game could be finished before lunch time, but a revival took place thanks to the middle and lower order. Marc Ellison (47) top scored for the Aucklanders and found help from wicket-keeper Cameron Fletcher who finished not out on 42.

The run rate had suffered with the regular loss of wickets and at the end of 50 overs Auckland had posted a meagre 145 for nine. Willie Lonsdale was the best of the bowlers for Canterbury as he helped to cripple Auckland with figures of four for 20 from nine overs.

Canterbury went about the run chase in sensible fashion and despite losing four wickets, made it look easy. Cole McConchie anchored the innings with an unbeaten 45 and Keryn Ambler and Logan van Beek added 27 to effectively end the game.

In the 38th over Canterbury put Auckland out of their misery with six wickets and 12 overs to spare.

Auckland A 145/9 (M Ellison 47, C Fletcher 42*, W Lonsdale 4/20) lost to Canterbury A 147/4 (C McConchie 45*) by six wickets.

Round 1 - Auckland v Otago (41 over game)

Auckland have beaten Otago by five wickets in their opening game of the Provincial A competition thanks to an unbeaten 80 from Neal Parlane.

Bad weather in the morning restricted the game to 41 over per team, but Auckland would only require 37 .1 over to chase down Otago's total of 218. Auckland decided to bowl first after winning the toss and had early success dismissing Ryan Duffy for ten.

Hamish Rutherford (30) and Darren Broom (28) steadied the ship for the Southerners as they took their team to 61 for one. However unfortunately for Otago both were dismissed in quick succession and two new batsmen were introduced to the crease.

The middle order did well for Otago though as Mark Craig top scored for his side with an unbeaten 62. Warren McSkimming also made an impact at the end of the innings as he smashed 31 from 17.
In the end Otago finished their 41 overs on 218 for eight. Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers for Auckland and collected figures of three for forty from eight.

In reply the North Islanders got off to the worst possible start when they lost Tim Mackintosh for just one. They recovered quickly thanks to a solid partnership between Andrew de Boorder and Neal Parlane. De Boorder stuck around just long enough to reach his half century before being dismissed on 53.

Parlane wasn't finished though. He anchored the Auckland innings all the way to victory and smashed two fours and five sixes on the way. In the end he - and a few partners – made easy work of the run chase and finished the game at the start of the 38th over with five wickets in hand.

It was a perfect start for the Auckland team, but the Otago bowlers will be looking to become a little more economical when they face Central Districts tomorrow.

Otago A 218/7 (M Craig 62. S Wells 40, W McSkimming 31, H Rutherford 30, L Ferguson 3/40) lost to Auckland A 219/5 (N Parlane 80, A de Boorder 52) by five wickets.
