National Tournament

Round 8, 9 Jan - Auckland v Central

Wellington were crowned Provincial A champions at the conclusion of the tournament at the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre in Lincoln today, despite losing to Northern Districts in an eliminator over in the final round.

Wellington finished on 21 points at the end of eight rounds, two ahead of Auckland in second place. Their back-to-back Twenty20 victories yesterday had given them a five point advantage over the rest of the field and ensured them the title with a game in hand.

Auckland themselves finished on a positive note with a stunning ten wicket victory over Central Districts. Canterbury was the other side to pick up points on the final day, elevating themselves into fifth with a three wicket triumph over southern rivals Otago.

Josh Brodie ended as the leading run-scorer for the tournament with 364 runs to his name, despite playing two less games than everyone else. Brodie had a top score of 110 and averaged 60.66 for the tournament.

The leading wicket-taker accolade was shared, with Sam Blakely and Joe Walker picking up 14 victims each. Blakely was consistent throughout the tournament, collecting at least one wicket in all but one of the matches he played in. Walker on the other hand had both a four wicket and a five wicket-bag to his name, with his best figures of five for 44 coming against Canterbury.

Canterbury's David Fulton was the most successful of the wicket-keepers, taking eight catches and effecting four stumpings to finish with a tournament high 12 dismissals.

Round 6 & 7, 8 Jan - Auckland v Otago and Wellington (T20)

Wellington won both of their Twenty20 matches on the penultimate day of the Provincial A tournament at the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre in Lincoln and in doing so secured the trophy with a five point lead over Auckland in second place.

In the morning match, Wellington held off Canterbury by four runs to regain poll position in the tournament. They were helped by Otago, who beat Auckland in a thrilling Eliminator-over to upset the defending champions and reduce them to second place.

Northern Districts also picked up a tight victory in the sixth round, with a dramatic final ball win seeing them past Central Districts.

The afternoon encounter between Auckland and Wellington loomed as decisive in who would take home the silverware tomorrow. Wellington posted an imposing 197 in the first-innings, before managing to restrict Auckland to 189 for six - still eight short of victory. It guarantees Wellington the title, regardless of what happens in their final match against Northern Districts.

In the other afternoon matches, Otago made it two from two in the Twenty20 format with a nine run win over Northern Districts, while Canterbury topped Central by 37 runs to pick up their second triumph of the tournament.

Despite being a part of a losing effort, Auckland's Cam Fletcher stole the show with the bat today. The 19 year-old scored an unbeaten 86 from 52 deliveries in his side's match against Wellington, continuing the good form he has shown throughout the competition.

The final round tomorrow sees three teams vying for second place, with just one point separating them.

Round 5, 7 Jan - Auckland v Otago

Auckland 's seven wicket victory saw them claim a one point lead after Wellington lost by 42 runs to Northern Districts in round  five of the Provincial A tournament at the New Zealand High Performance Centre in Lincoln.

The defending champions hold the top spot for the first time and now have only three rounds of Twenty20 matches separating them from back-to-back titles. They will however have to overcome Wellington in the process, who they face tomorrow afternoon in what will likely be a decisive match.

Today's big upset sees Northern grab their third straight victory and gives them a chance of competing for the trophy as well. The other fixture saw Central defeat Canterbury by eight runs to claim their second win.

Northern's 20 year-old Joe Carter was today's top-scorer with 92, while Central's Greg Hay again featured prominently with an unbeaten 90.

Auckland's Donovan Deeble produced the most impressive display with the ball, claiming a five wicket-bag in his 8.5 overs for 33 runs.

Auckland narrowed the gap to three points between themselves and leaders Wellington in the Provincial A tournament at the New Zealand High Performance Centre in Lincoln.

Auckland cemented their second place position on day five by beating Wellington by six wickets. The win gives the defending champions four more rounds to elevate into first-place, with their Twenty20 encounter against Wellington on the penultimate day building up to be a crucial match.

Also keeping their slim hopes alive was Otago, who convincingly defeated Central Districts by 73 runs. In the other match Northern Districts picked up their second win of the tournament with a four wicket triumph over hosts Canterbury.

There were no centuries today, although a number of players went close. Otago's Iain Robertson fell four short on 96, while Auckland's young star Cameron Fletcher made 95.

Rajiv Sharma was once again a force with the ball today, taking figures of five for 51 from ten overs to claim his second five wicket bag of the tournament. The other performance of note with the ball came from Northern's Joe Walker who claimed a fiver himself in his 9.3 overs for 44 runs.

Tomorrow sees the last round of One Day matches before the tournament heads into three rounds of the Twenty20 format.

Round One, 2 Jan - Auckland v Central Districts

Defending champions Auckland were beaten by Central Districts in the first round of the Provincial A tournament at the New Zealand Cricket High Performance Centre in Lincoln. Having come sixth last year, Central now hold a three-way tie for the lead having completed the convincing seven wicket victory on day one.

They're joined by Otago, who sparked an amazing comeback to beat Northern Districts by one wicket in a thrilling encounter, and Wellington whose opening batsmen batted superbly to see off Canterbury by 49 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis system.

The start of play was delayed, shortening all of the matches by a few overs. The games though were played under fine conditions from that point on, with some good individual performances shining through.

Wellington's Ben Orton scored the only century of the day and finished unbeaten on 105 off 115 balls. With Josh Brodie (95), he put on 202 for the opening wicket to guarantee his side the points.

Central's Andrew Lamb was the only bowler to take a four wicket-bag and ended the day with figures of four for 22 from 7.1 overs.
